Tape-and-reel approval needs to demonstrate that hardware retains a usable orientation after transport and feeds reliably with the intended feeder and nozzle. IEC 60286-3, TI packaging drawings and 3M carrier-tape guidance provide useful references for reviewing the pocket, part orientation and cover tape together.

01

Begin with the pickup surface

Mark the pickup plane, centre of mass, permitted rotation and surfaces the nozzle must avoid. A through-hole nut and a closed-top copper block present different pickup conditions. Include any special nozzle or temporary pickup cap in the trial. Draw the feed direction, sprocket-hole side and component orientation; a generic instruction to use standard orientation is insufficient for an asymmetric terminal.

02

Review pockets against finished-part tolerances

A0, B0 and K0 identify accommodation for component width, length and thickness. P1 is the pitch between pocket centres; W is carrier width. TI semiconductor drawings help explain these symbols, but their dimensions should not be transferred directly to metal hardware.

A tight pocket can jam. Excess space needs checks for rotation, tilt or inversion. Include post-plating dimensions, burrs, part balance and transport condition, then confirm compatibility with the actual feeder.

03

Evaluate cover-tape removal during feeding

3M describes controlled peel behaviour and pocket formation as important to reliable pick and place. Trial the selected cover tape and sealing conditions at the intended peel arrangement and speed. Watch for lifted parts and changed orientation. A cover-tape data sheet applies to its stated materials and test conditions.

04

Measure a trial with a clear denominator

Evaluate packaged samples after representative handling, then run the planned feeder, nozzle and production settings. Report missed pickups, inversions, jams, vision rejects and manual interventions together with total pieces and test duration.

  • Specify pocket tolerances, pitch, tape width and reel dimensions
  • Lock feed direction, part orientation, leaders, trailers and quantity
  • Record equipment, settings, defect definitions and lot traceability
05

Control packaging changes

A different carrier material, pocket tool, cover tape or sealing process can change feeding performance. Agree notification and revalidation rules, and retain a traceable link between the approved drawing and first-reel sample.
