An SMT busbar temperature-cycle test needs the actual PCB, solder system and mechanical constraints, with records of the specimen's exposure. IEC 60068-2-14 addresses ambient temperature changes. Current-driven self-heating requires a separately defined programme. Equal cycle counts can therefore represent different stresses.
Define the failure mechanism under review
Ambient cycling changes the surrounding temperature; power cycling creates local heating through electrical load. The busbar, solder and PCB can respond at different rates, while supports constrain expansion. Identify the intended use case and failure mechanism before choosing the programme. State the relevant method and conditions when referencing IEC 60068-2-14.
Test the structures that constrain the joint
PCB thickness, copper distribution, pads, solder, conductor span, supports and cables affect the assembly. An isolated metal specimen cannot qualify the installed solder joints. Retain the specimen revision, reflow profile, initial inspection and fixture drawing.
TI board-level reliability reports identify board thickness, pads, sample count and temperature profile together. That reporting approach is useful; their semiconductor-package cycle results should not be transferred to a busbar.
Verify specimen exposure
A chamber reaching its set point does not mean every solder joint has reached the same temperature. Plan sensing and stability criteria for the selected method. Record temperature limits, change rate or transfer time, dwell, cycle count and powered state. A pass statement with only a cycle count is difficult to compare.
Capture intermittent events as well as final condition
Some faults may occur during a transition and disappear at room temperature. Select continuity monitoring, event thresholds and sampling capability for the risk, with a method for distinguishing specimen faults from fixture or cable faults. Follow with four-wire resistance, visual inspection and appropriate failure analysis.
- Record initial resistance, joint images and specimen dimensions
- Define an event's threshold, duration and confirmation method
- Retain intermediate failures and early-stop reasons in the results
Keep the conclusion within the test conditions
Report sample count, acceptance criteria, failure locations and the full exposure. Converting test cycles into years of service requires an applicable failure mechanism and a validated acceleration model. A temperature-cycle pass alone does not establish life under every operating condition.
