Review strength, finishing and assembly together when steel bolts clamp a Cu-Al busbar joint. Assess hydrogen embrittlement against the steel and its processing, not the busbar material. Normal appearance or completed baking alone does not release safety-related fasteners.
Specify the complete coating system
ISO 4042's public scope includes electroplated steel fasteners and hydrogen-embrittlement risk reduction. Its official page lists the 2022 edition and a 2026 amendment. Identify applicable editions and clauses with the fastener owner rather than specifying only a zinc-plated bolt.
We recommend recording steel, property class, threads, coating, sealers and lubrication against drawings or part numbers, including matching nuts and washers. Bolt corrosion protection and busbar electrical contact finishing are separate reviews; bolt evidence does not qualify the conductor interface.
Review baking alongside the prevention process
Bossard warns of risk in high-strength or case-hardened electroplated steel fasteners. Baking can reduce risk without guaranteeing elimination, and failures can be delayed. Successful tightening cannot exclude hydrogen embrittlement.
Ask suppliers to identify preparation, plating, required prevention and batch-inspection bases. Do not turn generic web baking schedules or hardness thresholds into universal procurement limits. Have qualified owners review alternative finishes or materials and their validation for safety-related connections.
Reassess assembly when finishing changes
We recommend freezing bolts, nuts, washers, lubrication and contact surfaces in joint qualification. Review thread fit and tightening again when coatings change instead of copying the old torque. Assess clamping, corrosion and electrical temperature rise against their own project requirements.
Trace incoming batches to corresponding processes and evidence. Isolate associated batches and preserve fracture surfaces if delayed fracture or abnormal loosening occurs. Obtain appropriate specialist analysis rather than hiding problems by retightening. Timing or appearance alone cannot assign hydrogen embrittlement as the cause.
- Freeze steel grade and complete coating system
- Review prevention, batch evidence and residual risk
- Reassess assembly and joint validation after changes
Frequently asked questions
Does a salt-spray pass exclude hydrogen embrittlement? Corrosion and embrittlement require separate confirmation.
Is a stronger bolt always safer? Review material, finishing and the complete connection again.
RFQ inputs for steel fasteners and joints
Provide joint drawings, fastener identities, grades, coating and lubrication, safety ownership and validation basis. Agree changes, traceability and abnormal-result handling, identifying separate busbar and fastener supply and acceptance responsibilities.
Apply this guide to a project
Use product pages to identify the hardware family and the calculator for early estimates only. Acceptance depends on drawings, operating conditions and project tests.
